Testimony before the U.S. House of Representatives
On
July 26, 2006, the United States House of Representatives Committee
on Government Reform Subcommittee on Criminal Justice, Drug Policy,
and Human Resources convened hearings to address the growing problem
of prescription drug abuse.
Officials from
key government agencies testified on the extent and causes of the
problem and on current government efforts to reduce prescription
drug abuse. Parents of young people who died from misuse of addictive
prescription drugs also described their tragic experiences. Mathea
Falco, President of Drug Strategies and a leader of the Keep Internet
Neighborhoods Safe initiative, testified about new strategies the
KINS collaboration has developed to curtail illegal internet drug
sales. Additional witnesses discussed other aspects of the problem
as well as possible responses, including a public advertising campaign
by the Partnership for a Drug-Free America.
